An Algiers man shot and killed a masked intruder who tried to rob him and his family at gunpoint late Wednesday night, New Orleans police said.
The shooting happened at a home in the 1800 block of West Homestead Drive.
The 28-year-old man and his 36-year-old wife were sitting on their backyard patio about 10 p.m. when the masked man walked up to them and demanded money, said officer Garry Flot, a Police Department spokesman.
The masked man then ordered the husband and wife inside their home, where there were three children, ages 6, 13 and 14.
At some point the man was able to get his own gun and fatally shot the 25-year-old intruder, Flot said.
Authorities have not identified the intruder.
Police took the man’s gun and the intruder’s gun as part of the investigation.
Police made no arrests in the case, and no one else was injured.
Homicide Detective Ryan Vaught is in charge of the investigation.
