Police seeking man to question in shooting

A shooting Saturday evening on Canal Street followed a fight among dozens of people who apparently showed up in the 700 block for an event advertised on social media as “Canal Day,” authorities said, and police are looking for one person who might have information about the events that led to the gunfire.

The street fight that preceded the shooting at about 7 p.m. was apparently spurred by another fight that began a short time earlier inside a McDonald’s restaurant, police said. During the fight, an unknown man pulled out a handgun and fired it “indiscriminately” into the crowd, police said.

An 18-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to her right leg.

Detectives obtained a video and photograph of one of the men who was involved with the fight. They said they would like to speak with him because he might have further information about the shooting.

Anyone with information about this incident or the identity of the man in the photograph is asked to contact 8th District Detective Michael Flores at (504) 658-6707 or, or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.

Police described the man as black with a light complexion, between 40 and 45 years old, about 5-foot-7, weighing 150 pounds and having several gold teeth.

Anyone with information on his identity is asked to contact Detective Latoya Lamb at (504) 658-6020 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
