School bus driver, student both arrested Friday following fight _lowres

A Jefferson Parish school bus driver and a 13-year-old male student from Roosevelt Middle School were both arrested after they engaged in a fight in Kenner on Friday, according to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office press release.

The Kenner Police Department received numerous calls in reference to a fight on a school bus in the 1200 block of Veterans Boulevard. Officers met with the school bus driver Michelle Bratton, 44, and he claimed the male student refused to sit in his assigned seat on the school bus.

Bratton exited her seat and approached the student, telling him to get off the bus at which time a verbal altercation ensued. During the verbal altercation Bratton claimed the student spat on her, which caused a physical altercation to begin.

While investigating this incident, officers learned there was cell phone video concerning part of the altercation. Upon view of the video, Bratton is seen outside the school bus physically assaulting the student by striking him numerous times with a closed hand in the head.

As the result of the video and investigation, Bratton was charged with the crime of simple battery. The student was charged with battery on a school official and simple criminal damage to property. A bus window was broken after the altercation ended in which the student intentionally kicked a window on the school bus breaking it.

The Jefferson Parish School Board was notified of this incident and is conducting an independent investigation. At the time of this press release, Bratton was booked and released due to overcrowding.
