A man in his early 20s was shot and killed inside a blue Toyota Prius shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
Dave Badie, a police spokesman, said the victim was pulling out from a parking spot near the corner of Frenchmen and North Galvez Streets when a gunman or gunmen unleashed a hail of bullets through the victim’s passenger side door.
An onlooker, who declined to give his name, said he heard 10-15 shots. The victim had just gotten a haircut at a nearby barbershop, he said.
Badie said the victim was wounded multiple times in his head and chest, and died on the scene. The shooter or shooters fled on foot toward the river down Frenchmen Street, Badie said.
Police blocked off a large area around the shooting scene, including swampy grounds under Interstate 10 ramps, with crime tape.
Police have not identified a motive or a suspect in the killing. The shooting occurred just blocks from the old stomping grounds of the “FnD” gang, just two days after two members of that group were sentenced to life in prison.
Homicide Detective Jana Thompson is leading the investigation and can be reached at (504) 658-5300.
