TREE-PLANTING PROJECT: A volunteer project to restore the coastal forest near St. Bernard will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, beginning at St. Bernard State Park.

After a day of planting nearly 600 native trees in an area hit hard by hurricanes, the volunteers will celebrate their accomplishment with a free volunteer appreciation party sponsored by Leinenkugel Beer at the St. Bernard State Park.

Registration is required for volunteers for the project, which is sponsored by the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana and the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation. HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR: Six recreation centers operated by the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission will offer free Halloween games, treats, dancing, costume contests and photo booths from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. The centers are: Lyons, 624 Louisiana Ave.; Cut-Off, 6600 Belgrade St.; Treme, 900 N. Villere St.; Joe W. READING BETWEEN THE WINES: The monthly literary salon Reading Between the Wines will celebrate its first anniversary from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Pearl Wine Co., 3700 Orleans Ave., New Orleans.

The event invites back all authors who have participated throughout the past year to discuss their experience with the salon and what they have done since their appearances.

Pearl Wine Co. will offer a selection of wines by the glass for $5, and Crepes a la Cart will provide a food truck for the event.

Reading Between the Wines is family- and kid-friendly, free of charge and open to the public.

VETERANS DAY LUNCHEON: St. Charles Parish will host its annual Veterans Day luncheon from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center, 274 Judge Edward Dufresne Parkway, Luling.
