The crew of a Plaquemines Parish vessel pulled an unidentified body from the Mississippi River near Cedar Grove around 8 a.m. on Monday.
The lifeless body was found in an advanced state of decomposition, according to a release from Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Commander Eric Becnel. Authorities have been unable to determine the identity, race or gender of the dead person, but they hope that an autopsy to be conducted Tuesday morning will reveal more.
The body was first spotted by the U.S. Coast Guard around 7:30 a.m. Crew members from the Plaquemines Port Harbor and Terminal District vessel Port Authority I pulled it out of the water a half hour later.
The sheriff’s office has asked anyone with further information about the person’s identity or death to call its criminal investigations bureau at (504) 564-2525.
Authorities were able to use DNA and a distinctive skull tattoo to identify the heavily decomposed body of Anthony Ferguson, 27, after he was recovered near Port Sulphur.
