Kidnapping foiled in New Orleans East

Early Wednesday morning, a man with a handgun forced a 17-year-old woman into his car at Bergerac Place and Dwyer Boulevard in New Orleans East, police said.

The woman was waiting at a bus stop about 6:30 a.m. when a car approached. The passenger got out and forced the woman into the front seat. As the vehicle drove off, the man forced the victim into the back seat, climbed over the front seat and began unbuckling his pants, police said.

The woman managed to escape by opening the door and jumping out of the moving vehicle. She was treated for abrasions to her wrists and ankle.

The vehicle was described as a tan or light-colored four-door sedan with a black stripe above the rear bumper.

Seventh District detectives are looking for the two men and can be contacted at (504) 658-6070.

On Jan. 6, Sheriff’s Office deputies searched the prison block where Camper was housed and discovered a metal rod in his property bag. Because the rod can be used to create shanks, or homemade knives, it is considered contraband.

Camper already is awaiting trial on one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

The victim’s screams alerted neighbors who, with the help of someone walking by, forced the front door open, according to police. They managed to subdue Morgan until the police came.

Both Morgan and the victim suffered minor injuries.
