The parents of a 22-month-old toddler they say was bitten 11 times by another child at a Westwego day care facility have filed a lawsuit against a provider they said left their child unprotected.
Carl and Amanda Dufrene filed their lawsuit against Kayla Bellanger, 25, on behalf of their child in 24th Judicial District Court on July 18. They allege that Bellanger was negligent in her duty to care for their child. The suit seeks an unstated amount of money.
The Dufrenes say that they left their child with Bellanger on July 2. The day care provider then left their child alone with another child known to bite, according to the lawsuit.
When Amanda Dufrene arrived back at the day care site in the 700 block of Avenue G in Westwego, she found her child covered in 11 human bite marks on his body, face, arms, fingers, ears, forehead, legs and feet, the suit says.
Bellanger admitted she was not present when the child was bitten, the suit says.
The Westwego Police Department booked Bellanger on a count of child desertion.
The Dufrenes say that she was not properly licensed.
The toddler was taken to the hospital for treatment and given antibiotics.
