Suspect in double murder surrenders

A suspect wanted in a Monday night double murder in a New Orleans East apartment complex surrendered Thursday and was booked on two counts of first-degree murder, police said.

An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday for Ahmad Rainey, 33, in the slayings of Daniel Millon and Vernon Lewis, both 24. Police found the pair lying beside motorcycles inside the Hidden Lake Apartments in the 7000 block of Martin Drive. Both died at the scene.

Based on witness statements, police said Rainey’s girlfriend, 27-year-old Gilda Woodridge, helped him orchestrate the killings. Woodridge turned herself in to police Wednesday. She was not cooperating with authorities, police said then.

Woodridge was booked on two counts of being a principal to first-degree murder and a count of simple criminal damage to property.

She appeared Thursday in Magistrate Court, where her bail was set at $701,000, court records show.

Rainey was booked shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday.
