A 50-year-old woman died in a car accident early Thursday in the Treme-Lafitte area.
About 4:30 a.m., a green 2006 Chrysler Town and Country minivan driven by a 56-year-old man was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 exiting the Esplanade Avenue ramp, according to the New Orleans Police Department. As the van drove onto North Claiborne Avenue at Governor Nicholls Street, it collided with a gold 2007 Dodge Caravan minivan traveling riverbound on Governor Nicholls Street, trying to cross the intersection.
The Dodge Caravan flipped over, and the rear female passenger was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
New Orleans police are withholding the victim’s name, pending notification of family.
The driver of the Chrysler Town and Country was not injured. The 51-year-old male driver and a 47-year-old female front seat passenger in the Dodge Caravan were also not injured.
The driver of the Caravan was taken to the DWI complex for testing, police said. Blood and alcohol tests are pending.
