A man was found shot to death Monday morning on the front lawn of a small tan-colored house on a normally quiet block in New Orleans East.
Police said they arrived in the 8000 block of Vanderkloot Avenue, just off Hayne Boulevard, about 7 a.m. to find a body lying face-up in the front yard. It was not clear whether the victim had been killed on the spot or shot elsewhere and left there.
Some neighbors said they had not heard any shots and learned something had happened only when officers began taping off the area.
“I’ve lived here for 30 years, and the block is usually quiet,” said one man who declined to give his name.
However, a woman, who had just dropped off her children at school, stood at the corner talking with a friend. She said she lives three blocks away and heard several gunshots about 5 a.m. or 6 a.m.
She couldn’t be sure where the gunshots came from but wasn’t surprised to see the body on the ground.
“You wake up every morning,” she said, “and all you hear about is murder, murder, murder.”
The shooting came on the heels of a violent weekend in New Orleans in which three people were killed and three others suffered gunshot wounds, according to police.
Homicide Detective Bruce Brueggeman is in charge of investigating the Vanderkloot shooting and can be contacted at (504) 658-5300. Anyone with information also may call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
