Man falls asleep while burglarizing house
A Slidell man was arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly falling asleep on the couch of a house he had broken into, a Slidell Police Department spokesman said.
Sharrod McCullum, 31, was roused from his slumber by police officers after the homeowner got up and found him, spokesman Daniel Seuzeneau said. When asked why he was in the house, McCullum said he didn’t know but that he remembered drinking the night before.
Officers found that McCullum had entered the house by forcing open a rear door. He had a screwdriver and a GPS unit which officers suspected he stole from a car nearby, Seuzeneau said.
McCullum was booked on counts of simple burglary and criminal damage.
Man sought in Bourbon St. robbery
Police are trying to identify a man who committed an armed robbery early Tuesday morning in the 1100 block of Bourbon Street.
About 1 a.m., the man tried to grab a woman’s purse, police said. Witnesses attempted to intervene, but the man brandished a gun at them and fled the scene with a purse.
A bystander chased him for several blocks but lost sight of him.
Cellphone robbery on edge of Quarter
New Orleans police are looking for two men in the theft of a cellphone.
About 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, a robber approached a man at Burgundy and Canal streets and asked him a question, then grabbed the victim’s cellphone and fled.
Surveillance cameras captured the robber and possibly a lookout, police said.
Entergy employee robbed near City Park
An Entergy employee, 27, was inside his truck about 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 4400 block of Duplessis Street when two men came up. One tapped a gun against the window and demanded the employee’s wallet and cellphone.
The robbers took his money and made him lie on the ground as they fled in the Entergy truck.
Woman robbed at gunpoint in Gentilly
A 29-year-old woman was robbed about 1 p.m. Tuesday by a man with a gun in the 1900 block of Wickfield Drive.
The man demanded her purse. She complied.
Man robbed by 3 in New Orleans East
Three armed men robbed a 34-year-old man in the 8000 block of Chef Menteur Highway about 9 p.m. Tuesday.
The victim handed over his wallet, and the robbers fled.
Jilted ex cuts new lover with can opener
A man cut his former girlfriend’s new man, 58, with a can opener about 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 2000 block of Iberville Street.
Police said they will issue a warrant for his arrest.
LaPlace man gets year in check scheme
ALaPlace man has been sentenced to a year in prison for his part in a counterfeit check scheme.
According to court documents, Ellis Ranson III, 28, spearheaded a scheme to pass counterfeit payroll checks at Wal-Mart stores. He would have others cash the checks, and they would split the proceeds.
