Authorities have arrested a Metairie man accused of killing his girlfriend early Sunday and fleeing with three of their children, who are now safe.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office issued the update in the case at 1:43 a.m. on Monday, saying Pedro Alberto Monterroso-Navas, 43, had been arrested in a trailer park in Katy, Texas.
“All three of his children who were with him at the time of his arrest, are fine, and in the custody of Texas authorities,” Col. John Fortunato of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
“Investigators were told of a phone conversation that took place a short time ago between Monterosso-Navas’ child and a female friend who was staying in Katy Texas,” Fortunato said. “The mother of that child called our 911 Center to provide the information to us, which ultimately led to Monterroso-Navas being apprehended this morning.”
The Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Heidi Monroy, 24.
Deputies were called about 3:35 a.m. Sunday to a building in the 4000 block of Durand Street where Monterroso-Navas and his five children lived, according to Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the JPSO.
Fortunato said two of the children had knocked on a neighbor’s door and said something was wrong with their mother.
When deputies arrived, they found an unconscious woman lying in a bathtub, suffering from “blunt force trauma,” Fortunato said.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.
Ernesto Oroschena, who lives in a neighboring apartment, said the two children were running up and down the stairs of the apartment complex yelling for help in Spanish.
“They were yelling, ‘My mother’s lying down’ and ‘My dad killed my mother,’ ” Oroschena said.
Those two children were identified as Victor Manuel Monterroso-Monroy, 8, and Marlin Jouahny Monterroso-Monroy, 5.
Paul Ross, who also lives in the apartment complex, said the family moved in about two months ago. He said he never witnessed any fighting between the couple.
Investigators believe that Monterroso-Navas fled with three of the children: Jessica Nicolle Monterroso, 12; Yojan Manuel Monterroso-Flores, 4; and Jafet Abigaitl Monterroso-Monroy, 2.
Fortunato said Monterroso-Navas is from Honduras.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said Pedro Alberto Monterroso-Navas and Heidi Monroy were husband and wife. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office later said the two were not married and were boyfriend and girlfriend.
