Two people were killed in a single-vehicle accident early Monday, New Orleans police said.
Around 1:45 a.m., a driver of a white Chevrolet Impala was traveling westbound on Leon C. Simon Boulevard at a high rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle, the New Orleans Police Department said. The vehicle went off the road and crashed into a traffic light pole at Press Drive. It immediately caught on fire, police said.
Good Samaritans at the scene rescued a female passenger in the back of the vehicle. Both the driver and the passenger in front were unresponsive and trapped in the vehicle. Their bodies were badly burned, and they were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The third passenger was transported to an area hospital, where she remains in serious condition.
The New Orleans Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to extract the two deceased victims, police said.
None of the victims have been identified.
Blood and alcohol tests are pending.
