Sibling class slated Saturday at Touro
Big brothers- and sisters-to-be learn what to expect when a new baby enters the family in a free class at Touro Infirmary, designed for children 4 to 11, Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.
The class covers what happens when mom goes to the hospital, what to expect when the baby comes home, and how older siblings can help their parents. There will also be a tour of the family birthing center.

Free skin cancer screenings offered
The Division of Dermatology and the oncology nurses of East Jefferson General Hospital, the American Academy of Dermatology and the Christopher Guillot Memorial Melanoma/Skin Cancer Screen will be offering free skin cancer screenings from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the East Jefferson General Hospital Conference Center, Esplanade Rooms 1 and 2, in the hospital, 4200 Houma Blvd., Metairie. Sports medicine event planned
Physical exams, information about concussions and heat stroke and demonstrations of taping technique are among the highlights of a preventive medicine community event Saturday at the Ochsner Sports Medicine Institute, 1201 Clearview Parkway, Jefferson.
Coaches, athletes, parents, trainers and weekend warriors are invited.
Experts will provide preventive care through the promotion of wellness, fitness, performance enhancement and education.
There will be pre-participation physicals at $10 per athlete; physician presentations on concussion management and heat-related injuries; and sports medicine demonstrations on taping, physical therapy and athletic training.

Scholarships offered by Slidell Memorial
Slidell Memorial Hospital is accepting scholarship applications for the 2013/2014 school year for local students enrolled in a medical program at an accredited university or college.
Five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. To qualify, applicants and/or their parents/guardians must be a resident of St. Tammany Parish. Students must be 50 percent through their college or university curriculum; have a GPA of 2.5 or better; and have unmet financial needs.
Completed applications must be postmarked by July 5.
Application packets can be picked up in the Volunteer Services office at Slidell Memorial Hospital, college/university financial aid offices or downloaded from SMH’s web site at http://www.SlidellMemorial.org.
This project is funded by the SMH Volunteers who raise funds from book, jewelry and bake sales throughout the year.
