An unknown gunman opened fire on a St. Roch neighborhood street Friday afternoon, killing a man and wounding a woman, New Orleans police said.

The 35-year-old male victim was shot to death about 1 p.m. while sitting on the porch of a home in the 1700 block of Mandeville Street, said Officer Frank Robertson, a Police Department spokesman.

A 30-year-old woman was shot in the side. Her injuries were not serious, Robertson said.

The dead man’s name was not immediately released.

Homicide Detective Rayell Johnson is in charge of the investigation.

The killing and shooting added to a violent week in the city that saw six other people killed and at least a dozen others wounded.

New Orleans police also responded early Thursday morning to an armed robbery-turned-homicide when an off-duty Southern University at New Orleans campus officer fatally shot Jose Valerio.

Valerio, 17, allegedly robbed a woman of her purse about 2 a.m. in the 2600 block of Dreux Avenue while the SUNO officer was changing a tire for the woman and two of her friends.

The officer, who has not been identified, told Valerio he was a law enforcement officer and a brief shoot-out between the two ensued.

Valerio’s death has been ruled a justifiable homicide.
