After a man pointed a handgun at New Orleans police officers Friday morning in New Orleans East, he retreated to an apartment before surrendering, police said.

The incident began about 9:15 a.m. at the Majestic Oaks Apartments in the 6200 block of Chef Menteur Highway.

Police said officers went to the scene after hearing gunshots and encountered Horace Toppins IV, 24, who pointed a gun at them and fled to an apartment. Toppins later came out and surrendered.

No officers fired their weapons.

After Toppins surrendered, police said, they discovered that Javonda Desilva, 24, had been inside the apartment with him.

After obtaining a search warrant for the apartment, police recovered two firearms, a .22-caliber handgun and a 9mm handgun.

They said they later learned that Toppins and another man who fled the scene when officers arrived were firing at neighbors inside the complex after a verbal altercation.

Toppins was booked on five counts of aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a police officer, illegal discharge of a firearm in the commission of a felony and illegal carrying of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Desilva was booked on being an accessory to aggravated assault and obstruction of justice.

Additional charges are expected, police said.
