A Plaquemines Parish councilwoman who is trying to end the parish’s 2013 lawsuits against 68 oil and gas companies on Thursday withdrew her motion to put the suits on hold after failing to round up enough votes to pass it.

Nicole Smith Williams, an executive assistant for the gas company Targa Resources, won office in December after promising to kill the litigation, which her opponent had initially voted for.

She said the previous Parish Council approved a contract with outside lawyers who foisted the suits on the council without giving members all of the facts, and that the suits are going to drive away the oil and gas business that is the parish’s lifeblood.
