A recent prescription drug “take-back day” collected nearly 50,000 pounds of expired or unwanted prescription drugs, according to the New Orleans field division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The event was part of a nationwide effort targeting prescription pill abuse.

“Prescription drug trafficking and abuse is our nation’s fastest-growing drug problem and destroys countless lives,” Keith Brown, the DEA’s local special agent in charge, said in a statement.

“This widespread problem can only be countered by an effective collaboration among law enforcement, the medical community and the public to identify and stop those responsible for the illegal distribution and abuse of prescription drugs in our communities.”
