BioAesthetics, a New Orleans biomedical startup that works to improve reconstruction options for breast cancer patients after they undergo mastectomies, won the top prize of $25,000 Wednesday at the New Orleans BioInnovation Center’s annual BioChallenge Pitch Competition.
The center, an incubator for science and technology businesses, held the live-pitch event to help support and draw attention to the city’s emerging life sciences sector. The competition pitted four startups against each another for the chance to win $25,000 — and to gain the notoriety that goes with it.
Finalists competed in front of a live audience at the Joy Theater in downtown New Orleans, making 10-minute pitches to a panel of judges that included investors and industry experts.
Another finalist, InnoGenomics Technologies, which develops genetic testing, won $2,500 based on receiving the most votes from the audience.
Other finalists included Flux Diagnostics, which develops fast, low-cost in-vitro tests to diagnose various diseases without the need for extensive training or complex equipment, and Zenopharm, a Xavier University spin-off that is researching a drug to treat and prevent the recurrence of breast cancer.
