The new Assumption Parish Sheriff, Leland Falcon, will be sworn in Wednesday, earlier than originally planned, following the resignation of former sheriff Mike Waguespack in February.
Falcon, who defeated incumbent Waguespack at the polls in October, was to take office on July 1.
Falcon was working in a transition capacity with Waguespack, when Waguespack, a certified public accountant, resigned in February to take a job in the private sector.
Chief Criminal Deputy Bruce Prejean, who has served as interim sheriff after Waguespack resigned, will serve as commander of patrol, Falcon said on Monday.
In recent weeks, Falcon tackled the financial situation of the Assumption Parish Youth Detention Center in Napoleonville, which he said has been running at a deficit.
Unable to secure enough contracts guaranteeing beds at the center for more than 20 agencies that have regularly sent juveniles there, Falcon last month announced that the center will close on May 31.
The swearing-in for Falcon will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the church hall of St. Joseph the Worker Church, 3304 La. 70, in Pierre Part and is open to the public.
