PRAIRIEVILLE — A LaPlace man was on the Kansas City Southern railroad tracks at a crossing in Ascension Parish early Wednesday when a northbound train struck and killed him, authorities said.
Ascension Parish sheriff’s deputies said Bontrion Toliver, 24, was hit about 3:45 a.m. at the La. 73 railroad crossing just south of Airline Highway in Prairieville.
Lt. Col. Bobby Webre, chief of criminal operations at the Sheriff’s Office, said deputies don’t know why Toliver, who had no vehicle at the scene, was on the tracks at that time of the morning. An autopsy is being performed on him, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies were not initially able to identify Toliver because they could find no identification for him at the scene but later found out who he was. Toliver was from Dallas and had recently moved to LaPlace, Webre said.
C. Doniele Carlson, spokeswoman for Kansas City Southern, said the railway company is investigating the incident.
Anyone with information about the crash may call the Sheriff’s Office at (225) 621-4636.
