SORRENTO — Ascension Parish sheriff’s deputies are looking for a third Baton Rouge man suspected in the execution-style slaying of Gerald “Butta” Wilkins earlier this month, the Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday.

Darryl “Hoop” Jones, 41, 9429 Avis St., Baton Rouge, is wanted on one count of being a principal to second-degree murder, deputies said in a news release Thursday.

Wilkins, 41, 1123 N. Sabine Drive, Baton Rouge, was found shot to death along the side of LV Road in Sorrento at 7:53 a.m. Jan. 12, deputies said. Gunshots had been reported in the area between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. that day.

Jones shares an address with another suspect already arrested in Wilkins’ slaying: Cecil “Unc” Beals, 53, who was booked with one count of second-degree murder on Jan. 18, deputies said.

Investigators believe Wilkins, Beals and Calvin K. “Dirt” Williams, 37, 8539 Longwood View Ave., Baton Rouge, drove from Baton Rouge to Sorrento, bought gasoline, then drove to LV Road, where Beals and Williams shot Wilkins.

Williams was arrested and booked Sunday on one count of second-degree murder, deputies said. Jones’ alleged role in the slaying was not clear from the sheriff’s news release Thursday.

Around the time of the shooting, Beals and Williams also made several phone calls to a man who lives on Panama Road, Sheriff Jeff Wiley said.

The motive for the killing is unclear, but the men were “obviously involved in the illegal drug trade” and all “have extensive criminal records,” Wiley said.
