Hammond police found the body of a 34-year-old man in the 200 block of South Scanlan Street late Monday night and by Tuesday morning had arrested a 24-year-old Hammond man.
Tremayne Sandifer, 24, of Hammond, has been arrested in New Orleans after police issued a warrant for his arrest on first-degree murder, carjacking and carrying a firearm by a convicted felon.
He was booked at Orleans Parish Prison before being taken to Hammond, police reported.
He is accused of killing William Davis, 34, also of Hammond, the department posted on its Facebook page.
According to witnesses, Davis and Sandifer met for an alleged narcotics deal, police said. Several shots were fired, and Davis, who was struck, fled to a nearby residence, where he became unresponsive and died.
Sandifer is then accused of fleeing in the victim’s silver 2014 Toyota Camry.
Police said it is the first killing to have occurred within Hammond city limits in more than two years.
