VACHERIE — The St. James Parish Council unanimously approved an ordinance setting the 2011 property tax rate at 39.25 mills.
Parish President Dale Hymel Jr. told council members during their meeting Wednesday the parish government’s property tax is 1.6 mills less than last year, a 4 percent reduction, because the parish paid off some debt in 2010.
The millage collection provides for the payment of principal and interest on various issues of parish general obligation bonds and funds many public services such as road maintenance, drainage, fire protection and emergency medical response, according to the ordinance.
Councilmen Jason Amato, Elwyn Bocz, Wilson Malbrough Jr., Ralph Patin, Ken Brass and James Brazan voted to approve the ordinance. Councilman Charles Ketchens did not attend Wednesday’s meeting.
Other action taken by the council included:
BOND SALE APPROVED: The council unanimously approved an ordinance awarding the sale of up to $35 million in parish Gulf Opportunity Zone revenue bonds to Jeffries & Company Inc., a securities firm.
The bonds will be issued initially as fixed rate bonds with an interest rate not to exceed 8 percent per year and will mature no later than 12 years from the issuance date, the ordinance said.
Nucor Corp. will use the money to finance the construction if its iron-making facility in St. James Parish, the ordinance said.
Nucor resolution: The council endorsed Nucor Corp., the steel manufacturer, for participation in the Louisiana Enterprise Zone and Quality Job Programs.
As a result, Nucor will qualify for a partial rebate of sales and use taxes on purchases of building materials, machinery and equipment during construction of Phase 1 of the plant, Hymel said.
Road ordinance: The Parish Council agreed to consider a proposed ordinance that would remove from the parish road system some roads no longer needed for use by the general public.
According to the proposed ordinance, the streets and roads considered are Hymel and Helvetia streets in the parish’s District 4, which includes the communities of Convent, Union and Romeville; and Peachon, Pikes Peak, Sidney, Bessie K., Lapice and Aubrey streets, all in District 5, which includes the Vacherie and St. James areas.
Public hearings on the proposed ordinance will be held at 6:15 p.m. Sept. 7 in Convent and at 6:15 p.m. Sept. 21 in Vacherie.
