The Pearl River Rebels boys basketball team continued their hot hand with a convincing 93-89 non-district win over the Springfield Bulldogs on Nov. 27 at home to start the season 3-0.
Pearl River’s Blake Costello led all scorers with 38 points while Drew Soileau contributed 25. Whitney Friloux added 10 points in the win for the Rebels.
“I had a good feel for the game and got into a good rhythm,” Costello said. “I think we did a really great job not turning the ball over and looking for the open shots. They played me tough and banged me up pretty good, but most of my shots still went down.”
The Rebels jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead over Springfield. Soileau and Friloux each hit a pair of 3-pointers to start the game as the Rebels had a 23-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Springfield found its touch in the second quarter, outscoring the Rebels 32-24 and narrowing the deficit to 47-46 at halftime.
Soileau came up big in the third, scoring 10, while the Rebel defense did its part, holding the Bulldogs to only 16 to establish a 73-62 margin going into the final quarter.
Free throws played an important role in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs got into foul trouble. The Rebels took advantage by hitting 11 of 20. Soileau hit 5 of 6 from the line, while Costello hit 3 of 4 for some much-needed breathing room down the stretch.
Springfield mounted a run late to narrow the Rebel lead to 88-84, but the clock and Rebel free throws kept them from getting any closer.
“This is my senior year, so I have to put everything I have into every game,” Soileau said. “It was getting too close for comfort, so I knew I had to hit those free throws. Both teams played a great game, and we were happy to come out of it with a win.”
