A St. Tammany Parish jury convicted a Lacombe man Wednesday of sexually abusing two children younger than 10, a spokeswoman for District Attorney Warren Montgomery said.
Rigoberto Ventura, 57, will get a mandatory life sentence after the jury found him guilty of aggravated rape for sexually abusing a boy who was between 5 and 10 years old at the time the abuse occurred. Ventura also was convicted of sexual battery for molesting a young girl, Lisa Page said. The sexual battery charge carries a 25- to 99-year sentence.
Both victims testified at trial. The allegations against Ventura came to light in 2011, when the male victim told a substance abuse counselor about the abuse. The counselor notified family members, who reported it to Slidell police. Less than a year later, the second victim came forward with a report of abuse, Page said.
Sentencing has been set by District Judge Scott Gardner.
