A Saturday night benefit performance of the Fontainebleau High School Jazz Ensemble and guest Clarence Johnson III at the Dew Drop Social & Benevolent Jazz Hall in Mandeville has been canceled due to anticipated bad weather.

The event, which was to raise money to help the band travel to a competition in Savannah, Ga. later this month, has not been rescheduled.

The St. Tammany Parish public school system is canceling a planned record keeping and professional development day Friday because of the potential threat of flooding.

Students were already slated to have Friday off because it is the end of the third quarter. But employees should not report to work either, spokeswoman Meredith Mendez said.

The School Board meeting that was scheduled for Thursday night was cancelled and will be held next Thursday, March 17.

Update: 2:45 p.m.

The St. Tammany Fishing Pier at E. Howze Beach Road near Slidell, has been closed for the rest of Thursday because of anticipated heavy rainfall. The pier will remain closed Friday and Saturday.

Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville has been closed by the Office of State Parks due to anticipated bad weather.

It’s one of four state parks that was shut down completely Thursday; another three were partially closed.

St. Tammany Parish officials are gearing up for expected heavy rain, setting up five sandbag distribution points that will be open until 7 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

The city of Slidell is also setting up sandbag stations what will be operate the same hours. Slidell is limiting sandbags to 15 per household.

Streets were already flooding in Palm Lake subdivision Thursday afternoon, and city officials were urging residents to stay off flooded streets. Crews will operated pump stations on a 24-hour basis for the next three days.

The parish also asking residents to clear debris from culverts and drainage pathways.

The Mandeville Police Department has also closed Lakeshore Drive to traffic because of rising water and anticipation of worsening street flooding.
