All St. Tammany Parish Public Schools and offices will be closed Friday, Dec. 8, according to a posting on its website.
The posting stated the decision was made after coordination with the National Weather Service and emergency preparedness.
Parish government offices will also be closed, a parish news release stated.
The release added that "STAR Transit, Camp Salmen Nature Park, Kids Konnection Playground and the Tammany Trace will close as well. The Holiday of Lights events is cancelled Friday, December 8, 2017, but is scheduled to resume on Saturday, December 9, 2017."
The parish is under a winter weather advisory as rain is forecast to transition to a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow across some time Thursday night and continue into Friday. While accumulation is expected to be minimal, far northern reaches of the parish are expected to get over an inch of accumulation, according to the latest forecast. Overnight freezing temperatures are also expected across much of St. Tammany from Thursday night through Sunday night.
These threats have triggered the parish to go into its "severe weather protocols."
According to a news release, the parish's department of public works is prepping for the potential of dealing with icy roads, if that becomes an issue.
