A boil-water advisory has been issued for the Ben Thomas Water System in Slidell.

The water may have become tainted while repairs were being made to a fire hydrant on Bryant Road, according to a news release from St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister’s office.

During the repairs, the water was turned off and the system lost pressure, the release says. Once it was back on, the quality of the water was “questionable,” according to the release.

Residents are urged to boil water for one full minute in a clean container. The advisory applies to all water used for cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or rinsing foods.

The flat taste of the boiled water can be eliminated by adding a pinch of salt to each quart boiled, by pouring the water from one container to another or by shaking the water in a clean bottle.

Officials from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals are testing the water and will notify Tammany officials when the water is safe and the advisory can be lifted.
