A man who killed a 13-month-old girl while she was being cradled in her babysitter’s arms pleaded guilty to a reduced charged under a plea deal with prosecutors on Monday.
Darnell Ramee, 23, received a 40-year sentence under the agreement with the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office. He was accused of killing the infant girl, Londyn Samuels, and wounding her babysitter in the 2800 block of South Saratoga Street in 2013.
Criminal District Court Judge Darryl Derbigny oversaw the case.
The killing of Samuels and the shooting death of 11-year-old Arabian Gayles days later shocked the city with the youth of the victims.
Ramee was arrested days after Samuels’ killing along with a co-perpetrator, Keelen Armstrong. They were initially charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
Armstrong pleaded guilty to counts of accessory to second-degree murder and accessory to attempted second-degree murder on Friday in exchange for a five-year sentence.
