Oz, a well-known gay dance club on Bourbon Street, caught fire Monday after a sound system burst into flames, according to the New Orleans Fire Department.

Michael Williams, a spokesman for the NOFD, said firefighters responded to the fire at the French Quarter bar shortly after noon. He said they found "heavy black smoke" coming from the second-floor roof line of the three-story building at 800 Bourbon St.

The club, which operates 24 hours a day, was open at the time of the fire, but only the manager and the bartender were in the building.

The manager said he heard "popping sounds" coming from the second floor and called the bartender, who found some of the DJ equipment and wires were on fire, the Fire Department said.

Williams said the sprinkler system was activated and kept the blaze from spreading until firefighters arrived and put it out in 15 minutes.

Seven units and 22 firefighters responded to the incident. No injuries were reported.
