Firefighters were at the scene of a “major fire” at a well-known Gretna business on Tuesday morning, according to a local official.

Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts said that the fire was reported at Le Grand the Florist in the 500 block of Huey P. Long Avenue in Gretna. The store is a local landmark that has been in business since 1958.

WWL-TV reported that the building is considered a total loss.

Police urged those in the area to avoid Huey P. Long Avenue, Roberts said. The fire caused a large plume of smoke that could be visible from across the river.

Officials told WWL that no one was inside the building — which houses the florist shop on the ground level and an apartment on the second floor — when the fire began. Firefighters were notified of the blaze about 7 a.m., after it started, the station reported.

Officials were still working to determine the cause of the fire, which is believed to have started in the rear of the building, WWL reported.

The blaze at Le Grand the Florist was one of at least two reported on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish on Tuesday. Earlier Tuesday, a bathroom heater sparked a fire at the home of an 88-year-old woman in the 6100 block of Singleton Drive in Marrero, WWL-TV reported.

The woman escaped after being awoken by smoke alarms, according to the station.
