A Mississippi woman, reported missing after she was seen leaving her Canal Street hotel on June 26, has been arrested in Shreveport on an embezzlement charge.
Chanda Smith, 38, of Union, Miss., has been booked into the Caddo Parish Correctional Center as an "out-of-state fugitive," according to a report from The Clarion Ledger.
Earlier reports indicated that Smith was being held without bail on drug charges from Mississippi.
Smith's family said they were unaware of the charges, according to the report. New Orleans police reported that she was seen boarding a Greyhound bus to Baton Rouge before she was located in Shreveport on July 3.
A missing poster (right) was circulated after her disappearance.
Smith was reportedly visiting New Orleans with her mother and two children for the Junior Beta Club convention, held the weekend of her disappearance at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
Smith's cousin said she was without her medication and did not have her cellphone when she went missing. Smith's family said she suffered from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
