An Irish man living in Texas was jailed Tuesday and three others are wanted on accusations they raped a woman in a French Quarter hotel last year.
New Orleans police booked Patrick Mooney, 25, on a count of first-degree rape after he was extradited from Austin, Texas, records show.
Mooney at one point told a detective that he and as many as three of his friends had "sexual contact" with the woman, whom he described as intoxicated at the time, court records show.
Meanwhile, police have obtained warrants to arrest three others in connection with the case. David Campbell, Niall Carr and James Palmer are all believed to live in Texas as well, said spokesman Gary Scheets, of the New Orleans Police Department.
One definition of rape in Louisiana is having sex with a person who is too intoxicated to give consent. It can result in a charge of first-degree rape — which carries mandatory life imprisonment upon conviction — if more than one person is involved in the assault.
According to court documents, the unidentified woman told police she left a bar in the 500 block of Bourbon Street about 3 a.m. Nov. 25 with a man she believed was European and 25 years old.
They ended up at his hotel room, where he and several friends allegedly had sex with her after she stated she was not interested and was menstruating.
The woman said she drifted in and out of consciousness during the incident, recalling that the men hit and slapped her and that the bed sheets in the room were left bloodied. Then they told her to leave, she said.
Police got involved after a couple encountered the woman weeping on the phone with a friend, saying that she was lost.
NOPD Detective Claudia Bruce later spoke with a friend of the woman who recalled that she had been kicked out of a bar in the 500 block of Bourbon for being too drunk before she left another bar on the same block with a man. Two hours later, the woman was "crying and hysterical," the friend said.
Bruce found surveillance footage that showed the woman being blocked from entering a bar and then leaving with someone. Using data from the woman's cellphone, Bruce established that she was taken to a hotel in the 100 block of Decatur Street.
Bruce later identified up to eight people involved in the case, police said. It is unclear if anyone other than Mooney, Campbell, Carr and Palmer is wanted.
Bruce obtained an arrest warrant for Mooney on Feb. 7, and Mooney signed a document waiving his rights to contest extradition proceedings in Austin on Feb. 21.
Mooney remained behind bars Wednesday, hours after his bail was set at $50,000. An attorney representing him couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
Court documents describe Mooney as working for an employer named "PC Forward." He holds a driver's license from Dublin, Ireland.
