A Jefferson Parish schoolteacher was arrested recently after she sent naked photos to a student on the social media platform Snapchat, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.
Viridiana Figueroa-Ramos, 30, of Marrero, is a band teacher at L.W. Ruppel Academy for Advanced Studies, a middle school, according to a staff directory.
She also teaches talented music students at four other schools: Fisher Middle-High, McDonogh No. 26 Elementary, Leo Kerner Elementary and Terrytown Elementary, according to school system spokeswoman Beth Branley.
Officials at Ruppel were alerted to the photos on Nov. 17 and immediately notified Gretna police, Branley said. Figueroa-Ramos was arrested on Nov. 17 and booked on a count of indecent behavior with a juvenile. She was released on a $5,000 bond.
The school is located in Gretna, but the JPSO handled the case because the images are believed to have been sent from unincorporated Jefferson.
Pictures sent on Snapchat are generally available for only a few seconds before they disappear.
Figueroa-Ramos has been suspended without pay as an internal investigation is conducted.
The school system sent letters to parents at Ruppel and Fisher earlier this week; letters to parents at the other three schools went home Thursday. There is no indication of any additional students having received images at this time, Branley said.
Figueroa-Ramos' arrest came after rumors began circulating that a teacher was sending nude photos to a student, the JPSO said. The school's principal was able to identify the student, 13, who received the images.
A JPSO spokesman said he could not comment on whether the images had been recovered or if Figueroa-Ramos had admitted sending them.
