The survivor of Wednesday's deadly shootout in River Ridge hasn't been arrested, but the investigation into the case is ongoing, authorities said Thursday.
Patrick Lebranch, 34, was in his apartment in the 11100 block of Newton Street when he exchanged gunfire with 27-year-old Garland McDowell of Kenner, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Glen Boyd said.
Both were taken to the hospital, where McDowell was pronounced dead and Lebranch received treatment for a bullet wound to the leg.
The Sheriff's Office said the two men were in an argument when the gunshots erupted, but details about the disagreement haven't been released.
Boyd said Lebranch hasn't been arrested in the case but stopped short of saying he had been cleared of wrongdoing.
Whether the Sheriff's Office immediately arrests someone at the center of a deadly confrontation is not always a good indicator of whether the person will ultimately be arrested.
The Sheriff's Office initially released the men who said they killed former NFL player Joe McKnight and Metairie tugboat captain Braun Schneider in self-defense in separate incidents within the last 14 months, only to jail them soon afterward.
McKnight's killer, Ronald Gasser, was recently convicted of manslaughter.
