A man who was threatening to leap from the Huey P. Long Bridge on Monday afternoon has been safely taken off the bridge by first responders, according to officials.

The man was taken into custody about 7:35 p.m., ending a standoff that shut down both sides of the bridge for about three hours, said Carlton Dufrechou, the general manager of the Causeway Bridge authority, which also governs the Huey P. Long Bridge.

Dufrechou said he was expecting the bridge to reopen shortly after the man was taken off the bridge.

Both the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast were assisting police in their efforts to talk the unidentified man off the bridge.

The Huey P. runs over the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish, connecting the eastbank community of Elmwood to the westbank community of Bridge City.
