One person died and five other people were injured following a shooting in the Lower 9th Ward on Saturday night, the New Orleans Police Department said.

The shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. at the intersection of Forstall and Burgundy streets, where police said a crowd of 300 people were in the 5200 block of Burgundy when several gunshots were fired. The slain victim was a man, while the wounded included four men and one woman, police said.

Police detained one person following the shooting for questioning. They did not release the identities of any victims or the person being interrogated.

Multiple people at the scene told a journalist that the gunfire erupted as a funeral second-line was being held in the area in memory of Eddie Celestine, who was fatally shot Nov. 1 in the 6800 block of Cindy Place in New Orleans East. Celestine was killed on the same street where NOPD Officer Marcus McNeil was slain in the line of duty on Oct. 13.

People at the scene Saturday also described police being close enough to the shooting when it started that officers had to seek cover behind their cruisers upon hearing the gunfire.

New Orleans Police Commander Frank Young, who is in charge of officers that patrol the Lower 9th Ward, said authorities were investigating a call about several men running around the area with guns, according to WWL-TV.

The station said that Young described officers getting out of their cruisers on the scene when the shooting occurred as a result of some kind of disagreement.

In a separate case, the NOPD said it was investigating a homicide in Algiers in the 3300 block of General Meyer Street where a 29-year-old man was gunned down. No other details were immediately available on that incident.
