An 84-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman died after sustaining critical injuries in separate car crashes that happened on East St. Bernard Highway on Thursday, Louisiana State Police said Monday.

Theresa Richard, of Violet, Louisiana, was injured around 10:20 a.m. when a 2011 GMC Sierra driven by Johnny Atkinson, 49, crossed into the westbound lane of East St. Bernard and hit the 2013 Nissan Altima Richard's husband, Perry Richard, was driving.

Police said Perry Richard was wearing a seatbelt during the accident and was taken to University Medical Center for moderate injuries. Theresa Richard was not wearing a seatbelt and was taken to UMC where she died from critical injuries Monday morning.

Atkinson suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Police said impairment on Atkinson's part is the suspected cause of the crash, and he submitted to a blood test. He was arrested for two counts of first degree vehicular negligent injuring and a no seat belt violation and booked into the St. Bernard Parish Lock Up Thursday.

The second crash occurred just before 7 p.m. when a 2012 Freightliner driven by Kevin Owens, 53, of Atlanta, Georgia, collided with a 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by 84-year-old Carlo Carollo, of St. Bernard, Louisiana, as he was turning onto East St. Bernard from Volpe Drive.

State Police said all individuals involved in the crash were wearing seat belts and speed and impairment are not suspected.

Carlo Carollo and his passenger, 81-year-old Angeline Carollo, were transported to UMC. Carlo Carollo died from his injuries on Saturday, and Angeline Carollo remains in critical condition.
