Covington’s Daniel qualifies for tourney
AUGUSTA, G a . — Covington’s Abbey Daniel is one of 80 junior golfers to qualify for the second annual Drive, Chip and Putt Championship National Finals.
The event will be held April 5, 2015, at Augusta National Golf Club, the Sunday before Masters week begins.
Daniel finished first in the girls 14-15 age group on Sept. 15 in Southeast regional qualifying at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Georgia.
Daniel, who plays out of Money Hill Golf and Country Club in Abita Springs, advanced in the third of three spots from local qualifying at The Island in Plaquemine, then the second of two spots in regional qualifying in Brandon, Mississippi. Only the winner of her regional age group advanced to the finals.
Daniel is the first boys or girls player from Louisiana to reach the finals of this event, which will be televised live on The Golf Channel.
VooDoo announces trio assigned to team
The New Orleans VooDoo have been assigned quarterback Brian Reader, wide receiver Kyler Reed and offensive lineman RJ Bibbs announced the VooDoo front office Tuesday evening.
Reader (6-3, 215) spent the past two seasons with the Iowa Barnstormers, formerly of the AFL. Reed spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, NFL as a free agent, in 2013.
Bibbs (6-2, 320) spent the past two seasons with division rival Jacksonville Sharks.
Tigers host Bulldogs Wednesday on ESPNU
The LSU volleyball team closes a three-match home stand when it takes on Mississippi State at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for a televised contest on ESPNU.
The Tigers snapped a three-match losing streak on Sunday, defeating the Arkansas in five sets to improve to 6-7 and 1-3 in Southeastern Conference play.
Freshman outside hitter Gina Tillis has played well lately. Tillis had 15 kills against Florida last Friday, the Rockwall, Texas and delivered 26 against the Razorbacks, hitting .283 with six digs and a block in the victory.
“I thought Gina came in and was just really, really good,” LSU coach Fran Flory said. “We had players making defining plays and that was the change we needed to finally get over the hump.”
LSU gymnastics season tickets on sale
Season ticket renewals and deposits are being accepted for the 2015 LSU gymnastics season, the athletics department announced Tuesday.
Current season ticket holders may renew their tickets by logging on to account at www.LSUtix.net, calling the LSU Ticket Office at (225) 578-2184 or toll-free at (800) 960-8587, in person at the ticket office on the first floor of the Moran Family Center for Athletic Administration or by mail.
Season tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for youth. The season ticket renewal deadline is Friday, Oct. 31.
Fans interested in purchasing season tickets for the first time can place deposits at LSUtix.net or by calling or visiting the ticket office.
NCAA rules Texas A&M guard Jones eligible
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The NCAA announced Tuesday that Texas A&M men’s basketball junior guard/forward Jalen Jones will be eligible for the start of the 2014-15 season.
Jones will be eligible for the beginning of this season but forced to sit out the first four games of his senior campaign in 2015-16 after taking part in a two closed scrimmages for SMU before transferring to Texas A&M in January. Jones did not play in any exhibition or regular season contests in 2013-14.
