In running, it isn’t about where you start it’s always about how you finish. Jeffrey Kelley proved that throughout the cross country season while leading the Bears to a Metro meet title and a runner-up finish in Class 5A. He posted some of the fastest times run locally at Highland Road Park, including the winning three-mile time of 15 minutes, 29.66 seconds at the Metro meet. Kelley’s Metro meet time was 45 seconds faster than his early-season times posted at the Highland course. He also claimed a first-place finish at the Battlefield Invitational held at the Port Hudson State Historic site and then capped his sophomore season by placing sixth to help lead Catholic at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s Class 5A state meet held in Natchitoches, running a time of 15:51.59. This is Kelley’s second All-Metro berth.

Finished third at Class 1A state meet and placed 11th at Metro in 16:26.03.
Zach capello/Ascension Catholic, Sr.
Won his third straight 1A individual title and took second in 15:34.91 at Metro.

Placed fifth at the Metro meet in 16:04.41 and was the Bears No. 5 scorer at state.

Claimed a ninth-place finish at the Metro for the Broncos with a time of 16:18.91.

Led the Saints by taking seventh at the 3A state meet, and eighth in 16:17.97 at Metro.

Was the 12th-place finisher at Metro in 16:26.72 and placed 23rd at the 5A state meet.
Ben Vasterling/Dutchtown, So.
Paced the Griffins by placing 10th in 16:25.06 at Metro 45th at the 5A state meet.

The fact that Duplechin’s Knights won the Class 2A state title was nothing new. It was Episcopal’s 18th straight state title, which ranks second nationally.

Girls outstanding runner
Annie Hill/St. Joseph’s, Fr.
You only get one chance to make a first impression and Hill made the most of hers by bursting onto the high school cross country scene in a dramatic way. She ran the area’s fastest times at Highland Road Park and the state meet. The freshman won every race she entered through Baton Rouge’s Metro meet. Hill managed to run each mile at much the same pace, something few newcomers can do while making the jump from two-mile races in junior high to three-mile high school races. She won the Metro meet title with a time of 18 minutes, 26.66 seconds, finishing 33 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Hill concluded her season by placing fourth at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s Class 5A race. She ran a time of 19:02.91 to help the Redstickers finish third in the team competition.
Natalie Aguillard/St. Joseph’s, So.
Was the 14th-place finisher in (20:28.31 at the Metro meet and placed 31st in 5A.

Claimed the runner-up spot in Class 1A in 20:05.59 and finished fifth at Metro.

Notched a 10th-place finish in Class 2A after placing 11th at Metro in 20:13.18.

Was the third-place finisher at the Metro meet in 19:18.15 and 20th in Class 1A.

Finished fourth at the Metro meet in 19:20.56 and eighth at Class 5A state meet.

After placing eighth at the Metro meet in 19:58.47, she finished 26th in Class 5A.

Was the Metro meet runner-up with a time of 18:59.75 and took fourth at Class 4A.

Claimed a 13th-place finish at Metro in 20:19.41 and was 15th among 4A runners.

Capello’s ACHS girls squad won its first state title in Class 1A. The ACHS boys team also claimed a crown, giving Capello and the Bulldogs a 1A sweep.
