Any sunny forecasts for Tulane’s team following its 3-1 start grew a bit gloomier over the course of an overcast weekend at Turchin Stadium as Notre Dame completed a three-game sweep Sunday with a 8-3 win.

Irish designated hitter Ryan Bull went 4-5 with three runs to lead the team’s 14-hit performance.

After jumping to a 2-0 first-inning lead, Notre Dame’s solid control of the game and series was solidified by freshman right-handed relief pitcher Nick McCarty, credited with his first save of the season.

“The bullpen experience is new to me,” said McCarty, who gave up one hit and one walk in four scoreless innings. “It feels great, and it’s nice to be placed in positions by the coaches where they trust you to help the team win.”

Tulane slipped to 3-4 heading into a busy nonconference week of action, traveling to Nicholls State on Tuesday, hosting UNO on Wednesday and traveling to Tuscaloosa for a three-game series with Alabama over the weekend.

“Notre Dame just whipped us today,” Tulane coach Rick Jones said. “They had pitching out of the bullpen, and they swung the bats well.”

Senior Garrett Cannizaro led Tulane at the plate, going 3-4 with two RBIs with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth.

Tulane lacked two of its biggest threats of the plate with Brandon Boudreaux and Blake Crohan out of the lineup because of injuries.

Green Wave junior Kyle McKenzie (1-1) was credited with the loss, giving up seven hits in 3.1 innings.

Brady Wilson followed in relief, giving up five hits in 3.1.

Despite the weekend’s sweep, Tulane remains confident.

“Without a doubt we still have confidence in our offense — we have some talented guys on this team,” senior Brennan Middleton said.

“I just think that we need to be more aggressive on the fastball early in counts.

“We just need to be more aggressive mentally and more competitive at-bats.”

“It’s early in the year,” Jones said. “When we get healthy, this club can pitch, we’re going to play defense, we can catch and throw behind the plate. We get healthy, this is a really good club, and it’ll show, but we just have to get healthy and stay healthy.”
