SHREVEPORT - Two teams combined to produce 1,149 yards of total offense, and ultimately Class 2A Calvary Baptist came away with a 63-53 nondistrict victory over Lafayette-based Teurlings Catholic on Friday.
Calvary finished with 582 yards of offense, compared to 567 for Teurlings. Though known for its passing attack, Calvary (2-2) got 302 yards rushing from Brandon Wilson and also got two interceptions late in the game.
Quarterback D’Shaie Landor, a recent University of Louisiana at Lafayette commitment, completed 29 of 47 passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns for TCHS.
In the final three minutes as Teurlings (2-2) tried to rally, Calvary’s Shun Brown and Weston Steelhammer intercepted Landor passes.
Wolves make statement
Top-ranked St. Paul’s, of Class 5A, made a powerful statement with a 31-7 victory over cross-town rival Covington High in a District 6-5A opener.
The Wolves (4-0, 1-0) led 21-7 at halftime. In the second half, Covington got no closer to the end zone than the St. Paul’s 43. That one possession ended with an interception by the Wolves’ Jay Washington.
Quarterback Patrick Duncan completed 7 of 12 passes for 122 yards to help lead a balanced offense for St. Paul’s. It was the first loss for Covington (3-1, 0-1).
Running up big numbers
Johntrell White ran for 287 yards and three touchdowns, helping Avoyelles come away with a 60-58 overtime win over rival Bunkie.
White scored on a 5-yard run and a two-point conversion to provide the winning points for the unbeaten Mustangs (4-0).
Bunkie (1-3) scored three TDs in the fourth quarter to tie the game. Malcolm Jurell scored on a 9-yard run to tie the game at 52-52.
Jurell also scored a TD in overtime to give the Panthers the lead, setting the stage for White’s final heroics. Tonnie Wells scored three TDs for Bunkie.
Lions roar early
Ouachita left little doubt about what would happen in its Week 4 game with Class 1A Ringgold.
The Lions (3-1), ranked ninth in Class 5A, raced out to a 35-0 first-quarter lead en route to a 56-0 victory.
Tavarius Bovie scored on a 49-yard run on Ouachita’s first scrimmage play. Jarrett Triplett recovered a blocked punt for another score.
Quentin Wheeler also contributed TD passes of 35 yards to Camero Sims and 19 yards to Taijuan Thomas.
Purple Knights win
Highly regarded St. Augustine used the combination of running back Leonard Fournette and an opportunistic defense to notch a 40-21 victory over Hahnville.
Fournette ran for 208 yards on 22 carries and scored three TDs for the Class 4A Purple Knights (1-3).
Linebacker Alphanso Graves had three sacks during two pivotal possessions to help St. Aug. preserve its win over 5A Hahnville (1-3).
Southwood drought ends
Dezarrien Clark’s 30-yard TD run with 1:09 remaining in the game gave Southwood a 28-21 victory over Northwood in a game between Shreveport area rivals.
The win ended a long skid for Southwood. The Cowboys had lost 17 straight dating back to the 2009 season.
Southwood (1-3) scored the final two TDs of the game to prevent Northwood from starting the season 4-0.
