Country Day baseball coach Sam Dozer calls junior Grant Mathews his most versatile player.

That versatility helped Mathews land a spot on the 2014 Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A all-state team as a utility player.

Mathews played shortstop, first base and pitcher for the Cajuns and led the team with a .468 batting average.

“Man, he can really swing the bat,” Dozier said. “He has a beautiful swing and has led the team in batting two years in a row. He has the potential to play on the next level.”

Mathews also was 3-0 on the mound. He helped the Cajuns to a 14-10 record (10-2 in district) before they lost in the bidistrict round of the Class 1A playoffs.

He was an honorable mention all-state selection last season and was the lone player from a New Orleans area school to make first-team this season.
