Crossovers between traditional volleyball and beach volleyball are not unusual for college and professional players.

St. Joseph’s Academy Alexis Toney completed a high school crossover last month. Toney spent nearly all of July playing beach volleyball in southern California. She played in four tournaments with Pope John Paul’s Milayne’ Danna and five tournaments with Archbishop Hannan’s Hailey Cabeceiras.

Danna and Toney placed fifth in a field of 44 teams at the AAU Nationals. Toney and Cabeceiras finished fifth in a field of 43 teams at the AAU Junior Olympics meet.

Along the way, Toney competed in tourneys held in six cities.

Prentiss edges Rebels

Central Private opened its Mississippi Association of Independent Schools football season with a 24-18 jamboree loss to Prentiss Christian on Friday night at Ben’s Ford in Bogalusa.

Cade Sanchez completed 6 of 8 passes for 135 yards for two TDs in the contest played at Ben’s Ford. Sanchez threw scoring passes of 70 yards to Cole Averette and 20 yards to Jude Fontenot.

Fontenot had two catches for 46 yards. Baylen Watkins finished with four carries for 16 yards for CPS. Austin Slater added three carries for 15 yards, including a 6-yard TD.

A fumble that was returned for a TD and three missed extra points plagued the Rebels.

“There was some good and bad,” CPS coach Joey Sanchez said. “The best thing about it is this one doesn’t count on our record. We need to learn from it and get ready for next week.”

Central Private hosts Prairie View Academy in its season opener at 7 p.m. Friday.
