Nine teams from the Baton Rouge area look to punch their tickets to state tournaments this weekend in the quarterfinals of the LHSAA baseball playoffs.
No. 4 Catholic High takes on No. 5 Jesuit at 6 p.m. in a best-of-three series Friday on the Bears’ home field. Game 2 will be at 2 p.m. Saturday. If Game 3s are needed, they will be played right after Game 2.
Senior Brian Fairbanks (7-2) will start on the mound for Catholic on Friday.
No. 24 St. Amant will try to continue its Cinderella run at top-seeded Barbe this weekend. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 6 p.m. Friday to be followed with Game 2 at noon Saturday.
In Class 4A, No. 2 St. Michael and No. 10 Franklinton will meet in the quarterfinals for the second straight year. Game 1 will start at 4 p.m. Friday, and Game 2 will be at noon Saturday.
No. 1 Brusly continues the best season in school history against No. 9 Lutcher in Class 3A. Game 1 is set for 5:30 p.m. Friday at Brusly with Game 2 at noon Saturday.
Brusly coach Tait Dupont said the Panthers starting pitcher will most likely be a game- day decision, but either Evan Daigle (8-1) or Tod Gauthe (7-2) will start Friday while the other starts Game 2.
The Panthers aren’t the only team from District 6-3A left in the state tournament hunt for Sulphur, with No. 6 West Feliciana traveling to No. 3 St. Louis for a 6:30 p.m. Friday and then noon Saturday.
The Saints will start Trey Morgan (6-0) in Game 1.
No. 4 Episcopal is the last surviving Baton Rouge program in Class 2A and will host No. 5 Opelousas Catholic at 4 p.m. Friday and then noon Saturday. Chris Thibodaux (10-1) will start for Episcopal.
In Class 1A, No. 3 Ascension Catholic hosts No. 6 Vermillion Catholic at 5 p.m. Saturday at LaLa Regira Field in Donaldsonville.
Landon Clifton (8-1) will start on the mound for the Bulldogs.
No. 13 Catholic High-Pointe Coupee travels to No. 5 Hanson Memorial for a 5 p.m. game on Friday.
