Malcolm “Coach B” Brian, a longtime youth and AAU girls basketball coach-administrator, died Tuesday.

Brian, 75, a 1957 Catholic High graduate, played basketball at Catholic and Northwestern State. He started out coaching CYO boys youth teams, then began coaching girls players in the early 1980s, eventually forming the Lady Tigers AAU program.

“Coach B was a man who cared about kids,” former player and longtime Baton Rouge area basketball official Becky Davidson said. “I was part of his first girls team.

“We played against the boys teams in the CYO league, including a boys team he coached that had Todd Kinchen (future LSU football star). “A lot of girls got the chance to go on and play in college because of Coach B.”

Brian’s roster of coaches in his AAU program featured local high school coaches. University High’a Bonita Johnson and St. Michael the Archangel’s Tami McClure are among the coaches who were involved with Brian’s program. Kathy Miles, the wife of LSU football coach Les Miles and a former college assistant coach, coached with Johnson in Brian’s program.

“Coach B didn’t just care about the girls when they played for his teams,” Johnson said. “He followed them through their high school seasons and beyond. You’d look up in the stands at high school games, and he’d be there. He was a season ticket holder for the LSU men’s and women’s teams too.”

“B should have started out as a coach,” his brother David Brian said. “I think that was his calling.”

Visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home will be from 9 a.m. Friday until funeral time at 10:30 a.m.
