MONROE — St. Michael the Archangel took giant steps toward another possible Division II boys tennis title Tuesday thanks to the play of Cameron Andry and Jeremy Braud.

Andry, the defending champion and the No. 1 seed, advanced to Wednesday’s semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1 quarterfinal victory over Benton’s Christopher Bates on the second day of competition at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s State Tennis tournament.

Braud advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-0 quarterfinal win over Ruston’s Caleb White.

In Division II girls action, St. Michael’s Shelby Broussard advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to 6-3, 6-3 to Neville’s Layne Fincer.

Meanwhile, in Division I boys action Catholic High’s Payton Stuart made it to the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Dutchtown’s Noah Griffon. Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Catholic’s William Aguillare, a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 winner over Byrd’s Colin Lucius, and Zachary’s Jot Sahnu, who defeated St. Paul’s Cameron Warner 6-1, 6-0.

St. Joseph’s Academy’s Mackenzie Noonan lost to Dominican’s Gabby Terranova 6-4, 7-5 in the Division I girls singles quarterfinals.


DIVISION I, REGION I: Jesuit finished with the low team score of 305 and Ponchatoula’s Blake Caldwell carded a 70 to claim top individual honors Tuesday at the Oak Wing Golf Club in Alexandria.

Catholic High (308), St. Paul’s (314) and Mandeville (326) were the other team qualifiers for next week’s LHSAA State tournaments in the Shreveport area.

Jesuit’s Grant Glorioso shot a 71 to place second overall. Catholic was led by Triston Elston, who finished with a 73. Thomas Ruli of St. Paul’s and Michael Ferrer of Mandeville each finished at 74.

DIVISION III, REGIONAL II: Baton Rouge Metro champion Trey Winstead shot a 70 to take top individual honors while leading University High to the team title Tuesday at Patterson’s Atchafalaya at Idlewild course.

The Cubs tallied 304 a score, finishing ahead of Parkview Baptist (311), Catholic-New Iberia (316) and Newman (323). All four teams advance to next week’s state tourney in the Shreveport area.

Northlake Christian’s Stephen Wall (71), University’s Michael Sotile (72) and Parkview’s Brek Balentine (72) were the other top individual finishers.
