St. Amant High has moved its LeBlancs Jamboree to Dutchtown High on Friday night because of turf issues with its stadium, but the Gators are not prepping to make other varsity football schedule changes.
“It’s about getting a little more time for the new grass to grow and get set,” St. Amant coach David Oliver said. “The grass between the numbers is getting pretty thick. They brought sod in to help some of the areas between the numbers and the sideline, and it’s starting to take.
“We just felt like it was best to move the jamboree to give us another week before the first varsity game. That’s important because we’ll play four of our first five games at home.”
The Ascension Parish School System had the St. Amant and East Ascension field surfaces revamped over the summer so that celebration Bermuda grass like the kind LSU uses could be planted.
St. Amant’s The Pit, located at St. Amant Middle School, and East Ascension’s Spartan Stadium, located next to Gonzales Primary School, are two of the Baton Rouge area’s iconic stadium venues.
East Ascension announced earlier in the summer that Spartan Stadium would not be used until the Spartans’ first home game in Week 2, providing nearly an extra month for the field turf to grow.
Field conditions at The Pit fell under scrutiny in the past week as the sod was brought in to help thicken the turf in some areas. Speculation about moving Friday’s jamboree began over the weekend. The Gators host East Ascension for freshman, junior varsity and varsity games starting at 5 p.m. now at Dutchtown, the day after the Griffins host Walker for their jamboree. SAHS hosts Warren Easton for a high profile nondistrict season opener on Sept. 5.
St. Amant Principal Mia Edwards confirmed the jamboree change in an email sent Monday and also noted the Gators’ subvarsity games next week have been moved to other sites.
Oliver said there are currently no plans to move the Warren Easton game, but said there are contingency plans in place if it is necessary to move the Week 1 game.
“I feel good about us being able to play on our field next week,” Oliver said. “I think the extra week will make a difference.”
